New York race report R12

17 July 2022: Round 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in New York City today did not disappoint in terms of electrifying on-track action. NIO 333 Formula E Team drivers Dan Ticktum and Oliver Turvey fought hard throughout the 45 minutes plus 1 lap contest on the streets of Brooklyn to come home in P12 and P15 respectively.

Both drivers went out in Group B for Qualifying this morning, when the team tried to maximise on its performance from yesterday. For the race, which saw temperatures rise to 45 degrees Celsius on the high grip, dirty and undulating track, the team executed two different strategies for the #3 and #33 NIO 333 001 challengers. This came into effect immediately after lights out for the start of Round 12 of the New York City E-Prix this afternoon when Dan launched rapidly from the line and made up five places to run in P12 by the end of the first lap. Oliver was on an energy saving strategy, which saw him improve on position toward the closing laps of the race.

After an aggressive Round 12 filled with the thrills and spills that come with Formula E racing, Dan and Oliver took the chequered flag, narrowly missing out on the points in P12 and P15 respectively (P16 after post race penalty).

“It was a tough day, we showed reasonable pace in practice but struggled pushing the car in qualifying. The start of the race went well, I was able to save some energy and then with attack mode close the gap and overtake a couple of cars. I gained a few more positions to move forward at the end of the race to finish P15. Hopefully we can take this weekend’s learnings into London to have a strong home race.”

“It was a much better day today. We still needed to find one lap pace in qualifying, but we were only three tenths off the quickest in group, so it’s very close. I got a great start to the race – the launch was fantastic. I went around the outside at turn one and overtook quite a few cars and we held position, which is really encouraging. There are many positives to take away from New York, and we shall aim to keep bringing the improvements we are making to London in a couple of weeks.”

“It was a productive weekend overall for the team. We tried different strategies in both rounds and today they paid off to show our improvement.

We still have some way to go and a lot to do before the London events – with several Gen3 development programmes taking place in the coming weeks. But we are committed to finishing the season on a high so shall be consolidating all we learned this weekend and bringing it to the London E-Prix at the end of the month.”

The team now heads back to the UK to prepare for Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2022 FIA Formula E World Championship at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London’s Docklands on 30th and 31st July.
