Berlin race 1 report s8

14, May, 2022: Round 7 of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship kicked off in earnest today at the iconic Tempelhof airport in central Berlin. The first race of the double-header event did not go to plan and produce the results that the NIO 333 Formula E Team had hoped for, however the action starts all over again tomorrow when the field tackles the high-grip track in reverse for Round 8.

Oliver Turvey, #3 NIO 333 FE 001
Qualifying Group A – Race Grid Position: P14
Round 7, Provisional Race Result: P16
“It was an encouraging day; I had decent pace and felt more competitive in both free practice sessions. Although I did my best lap of the day in qualifying, it was super close and with a competitive group we lined up on the grid in P14. The race was more challenging as we struggled for pace in the opening laps. We were efficient in the middle of the race and able to overtake a number of cars to move forward. We ended up tight on energy whilst battling in the final laps, but feel we learnt a lot today and hope to take those improvements in to tomorrow for the reverse direction race.”

Dan Ticktum, #33 NIO 333 FE 001
Qualifying Group A – Race Grid Position: P21
Round 7, Provisional Race Result: P19
“It was a difficult day for me personally. I struggled to get used to the track this morning, which is quite unusual for me. In virtue of my qualifying position, we opted for a ‘save’ [energy] strategy. Unfortunately, it was just my luck that the race progressed without any incidents! It was probably one of the cleanest Formula E events in history, so I couldn’t really capitalise on anything we had planned. On to tomorrow and another opportunity to learn and improve.”

Alex Hui, Team Principal, NIO 333 Formula E Team
“Today was largely uneventful, but very productive. We didn’t achieve the results we wanted but I am pleased with a number of the technical and operational steps we have made. We look forward to further progress tomorrow and the challenge of the reversed circuit layout. We had a really strong race two here last year and we will be pushing for more points again.”
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship continues with Round 8 of the all-electric racing action in Berlin tomorrow, beginning with Free Practice 1 at 07:15 CET.
