Blues Traveler – CANCELED

September 30, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$60
  1. Blues Traveler is very sad to announce the cancellation of the remainder of their 2021 tour dates, due to the injury John Popper sustained in the band鈥檚 recent bus accident.

Once upon a time聽(1987 to be exact), a group of guys jammed out blues in a garage somewhere in New Jersey.

However, it took them 33 years to really do it again in the same way.

In between, Blues Traveler made every boyhood rock 鈥榥鈥 roll dream come true. They burst onto the scene with a trio of gold-selling albums鈥Blues Traveler聽摆1990闭,听Travelers and Thieves聽[1991], and聽Save His Soul聽[1993]. Then in 1994, Four went six-times platinum and spawned the definitive 鈥淩un-Around,鈥 which garnered a GRAMMY聽Award in the category of聽鈥淏est Rock Performance By a Duo or Group.聽They logged another platinum album with聽Straight On Till Morning聽in 1998 and spent the next twenty years selling out shows on multiple continents. In 2018,聽Hurry Up & Hang Around聽kicked off a new era with the guys firing on all cylinders. However, they look back and leap forward on their fourteenth full-length album,聽Traveler鈥檚 Blues聽[Round Hill Records].

This time around, the quintet鈥擩ohn Popper [vocals, harmonica], Chan Kinchla [guitar], Tad Kinchla [bass], Ben Wilson [keyboards], and Brendan Hill [drums]鈥攔eimagined and recharged classics from the American blues songbook and a few surprises, making the record they were always meant to make.

After finishing up a marathon tour cycle in support of聽Hurry Up & Hang Around, the musicians returned home only to be faced with quarantine just like the rest of us. They wanted to do a new record, but they didn鈥檛 want to do it the same way.

Kicking around ideas, it made perfect sense to handpick timeless tunes, invite a few friends to the party, and throw down on some old school blues.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of onus on us to honor traditional blues values and follow them,鈥 he explains. 鈥淲hile paying homage to the original聽鈥榊ou Got Me Runnin鈥,聽we took everything and ran with it in the Blues Traveler way.鈥

Swaggering piano struts through tambourine on the Mississippi Sheiks staple 鈥淪ittin鈥 On Top of the World鈥 [feat. Warren Haynes] before Popper and Warren trade verses, and Chan and Warren trade licks.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an old blues song, but we brought a modern jam vibe to it,鈥 he continues. 鈥淲e鈥檝e known Warren since 1990 when we opened up for The Allman Brothers. We鈥檝e played with him in various ways for three decades. He鈥檚 an amazing musician and a wonderful guy. It鈥檚 cool we鈥檙e still rocking together after all these years.鈥

Then, there鈥檚 their take on the Gnarls Barkley smash 鈥淐razy鈥 [feat. Rita Wilson & John Scofield]. As the beat simmers, Popper leans into the iconic lyrics with palpable charisma before Scofield rips a lead and Rita delivers a powerhouse counter-vocal. On Son Seals鈥櫬 鈥淔unky B****,鈥 which Phish also does a live version of, they dive into a fluid jam and proudly聽鈥淟et our Blues Traveler flag fly,聽according to Chan. 鈥淩oadhouse Blues鈥 serves as a raucous Doors tribute and revs up into a聽鈥渃ool harmonica vehicle.鈥澛鈥淣eed Your Love So Bad鈥濃攐riginally made famous by Little Willie John鈥攂rings them into new territory altogether, while Nina Simone鈥檚 鈥淭rouble in Mind鈥 [feat. Keb鈥 Mo] concludes with a scorching soul duet uplifted by bass-y piano, lyrical soloing, and vibrant harmonica.

In the end, Blues Traveler came back home and played the hell out of the blues on聽Traveler鈥檚 Blues.
